Schloss Molsdorf: reconstruction of the 'Room of Ladies' c.1845
-
A pencil drawing of the 'Room of Ladies' in Schloss Molsdorf. The figures in this room are identified on the mount as Count Götter and his secretary. Some portraits on walls are also identified, among them Sophia Dorothea, daughter of King George I; Louise Ullrica, Queen of Sweden; Anna Caterina of Russia; Charlotte Princess of Prussia, and Duchess Louise Dorothea.
This sheet and RCIN 920664 are historical reconstructions of two of the eighteenth-century interiors in Schloss Molsdorf. Count Gustavus Adolphus von Götter bought the castle in 1732 and lived an extravagant life there until the outbreak of the Seven Years' War. The castle was later acquired by the Dukes of Saxe-Gotha. Queen Victoria visited Schloss Molsdorf on 31 August 1845, admired the many portraits and commented on the 'licentious lives' of the Count and his friends, noting everywhere in the decoration the Count's motto 'Vive la Joie'. Many of the portraits are still in the Saxe-Coburg collection.
Together, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert mounted many of their drawings related to Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in three albums, and a surviving typescript list of their contents is presumed to accurately reflect their arrangement. These albums were dismantled around 1930 and many of the drawings were rearranged in the new, topographical, Souvenir Albums. The third of the albums, titled 'Views of Scenery in the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha' and from which this drawing derives, probably comprised Prince Albert's own collection of drawings.
Provenance
Originally mounted in the third volume of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha albums, no. 74a, probably from the collection of Prince Albert
