A watercolour view of Schloss Callenberg from the park. Charlotte Canning was Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria, and a talented artist. The Queen often asked her to record views for the Souvenir Albums, among them this view of the towering Schloss Callenberg, one of the residences of Albert’s brother Duke Ernest II. Lady Canning was in Waiting to the Queen during a trip to Coburg in 1845, the first of two made by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert together. The watercolour shows the appearance of the Castle before Duke Ernest’s renovations in the late 1850s. There is a preparatory study for this watercolour in the collection of Harewood House.
Provenance
Painted, at Queen Victoria’s request, for the third of the Souvenir Albums
