A watercolour showing a detailed interior view of the Queen's Sitting Room at Buckingham Palace. Signed and dated.
The pictures shown on the walls are all newly painted portraits of close members of Queen Victoria's family. Over the mantelpiece is a portrait of Louis-Philippe, Prince Royal of Belgium by Léon Cogniet. Beyond the fireplace hang portraits by Winterhalter, mostly of the early 1840s; in the centre, that of Queen Louise with the Duke of Brabant, and others of Prince Alfred, the Princess Royal, Princess Alice, the comte d'Eu, the Duke of Brabant and the Count of Flanders. The three-quarter length portraits on the end wall are of Prince Albert by Partridge, and the duchesse of Nemours by Winterhalter. Confusingly the portrait of Prince Arthur by Winterhalter, on the end wall on the left, was not painted until 1852, so it must have been added to the watercolour later. As in the Queen's Sitting Room at Osborne, the two royal writing tables are placed together in the centre of the room. On the mantelpiece is a Regency clock and Sèvres vases. The candelabra are by Vulliamy. In a version of this watercolour in a private collection in Florida (purchased in Vienna in 1921), also dated 1848, Prince Arthur’s portrait is absent and there are variations in the furnishing of the room; the title is inscribed on the mount in French.Provenance
