James Giles (1801-70)
Balmoral: the dining-room in the old Castle dated 1855
-
A watercolour view of the dining room in the old Balmoral Castle. The dining table in the centre of the room covered with a white cloth; many pictures on walls, acquired with the house, but sold in 1857; fireplace to left. Signed and dated.
Four watercolours by the Aberdeen Artist James Giles were commissioned by Queen Victoria to record the four principal rooms in the old Balmoral Castle, prior to its demolition in 1856. However, the watercolours were considered too large and the photographer George Washington Wilson (1823-93) was commissioned to produce smaller photographic copies of them that Giles subsequently hand coloured (see RCINs 2140210, 2140212, 2140214 and 2140217).
