Paul Sandby made hundreds of drawings of Windsor Castle and the surrounding area throughout his career. In 1765 his brother Thomas was appointed Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park, and took up residence in the Deputy Ranger's House (now Royal Lodge) in about 1770. This drawing shows the house from Snow Hill in Windsor Great Park. Two other pencil drawings of the house are RCINs 917868 and 917871. Other watercolours of the gardens of the Lodge include two watercolour drawings, RCIN 917555 and 917556, and three more finished watercolours 917634, 917597 and 917596. Paul Sandby regularly visited his brother and his family at Windsor, especially after 1782, when Paul's son Thomas Paul married his cousin, Thomas's daughter Harriot.
