Thomas Sandby (1721-98)
The north front of Windsor Castle from Eton c. 1750-60
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the north front of Windsor Castle, seen from the Eton bank. Unfinished, with a figure in a boat in the water. Inscribed in pencil in the artist's hand below: St George's Chapel & Windsor Castle from Eton, and in the lower right corner: T. S. On the verso, pen and ink and watercolour sketches of the Round Tower and St George's Chapel. Pro Patria watermark.
Thomas Sandby made many drawings of Windsor Castle and the surrounding area, and worked as architect for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland after his appointment as Ranger of Windsor Great Park in 1746. His drawings often show carefully delineated architectural details, and his brother Paul regularly supplied him with figures for his works. This unfinished drawing of the north bank of Windsor Castle shows his careful technique, and can be compared with a drawing of Windsor from the Goswells, drawn in a camera obscura (RCIN 914602). A loose drawing of the same view from further back, with similar inscriptions, is RCIN 917853.Provenance
