John Gilpin's Ride late eighteenth century
Pencil, pen and watercolour, cut to oval | 32.0 x 40.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 917676
-
A drawing of John Gilpin on his runaway horse. He clings to the horse's mane as his hat and wig fly off. Two riders pursue him. A dog barks and figures waving sticks and pitchforks cheer as he passes. On the verso a faint pencil sketch of a galloping horse.
Henry William Bunbury came from an aristocratic family, served in the army and as the Duke of York and Albany's equerry. He was a prolific caricaturist and his drawings satirise society and culture of the later eighteenth century. In London he moved in the circles of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Dr Johnson and David Garrick. This drawing is in his manner but has not been firmly attributed to him.Provenance
Probably acquired by George IV
