In the garden at Woolmers dated 1783
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of a gravel walk, lawns, trees, and an artificial ruin in a park. Inscribed below in pen and ink: 'Woolmers 1783'. Pasted on a sheet of paper with an orange and black wash-line border, possibly Sandby's own. Inscribed on the mount in pencil: 'in the Garden at Woolmers Beds [sic]'. On the verso, in pencil: 'P. Sandby', 'From Mr Sandby's Sale', 'Purchased at a Sale by Mr Sotheby, London Dec 18 1822 [initials]' and [erased] 'From P. Sandby Esq's Sale'.
Woolmers Park in Hertfordshire was owned by Samuel Whitbread, a brewer, MP and friend of Paul Sandby. Another drawing made by Sandby of the wife of Whitbread's gardener at Woolmers is RCIN 914338, dated 1784. Another version of that drawing is in the British Museum, in pencil and grey wash, and inscribed in Paul Sandby's hand, 'Fanny Servant of Mr Whitbread at Woolmer's' (1872,1012.3417).
