A pen and watercolour drawing of the New Lodge (later Fort Belvedere) in Windsor Forest, on a hill with trees. A horse and carriage is in the foreground, attended to by a groom with a whip. On the left is a man on horseback pointing with a whip. Two further figures are climbing the hill with a dog. In the sky is a flock of birds, and some low hills in the distance. Signed in pen and ink at lower left corner, 'MARooker 1776'.
The New Lodge was built between 1750-55 by Henry Flitcroft for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland on Shrubs Hill, overlooking Virginia Water in Windsor Great Park. This watercolour drawing is identical with a print by the artist after Paul Sandby, dated June 1 1777. This print is no. 5 in the set of prints published as 'A Collection of 150 Select Views in England, Scotland, and Ireland, drawn by P. Sandby, Esq., R.A.', first issued by Kearsly, and afterwards by Boydell, in 1781. -
