A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the south front of Windsor Castle, showing the footpath to Datchet. On a washed mount.
On the left is the house that became the Queen's Lodge in 1778. Thomas Hearne trained as a printmaker with William Woollett before travelling to the Leeward Islands, returning in 1775. After this he concentrated on making topographical watercolour views, exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1785 and 1793. His 'tinted drawings' were imitated by the young JMW Turner and Thomas Girtin. Hearne provided 84 drawings that were engraved by William Byrne and published as The Antiquities of Great Britain (1778–81) to which this drawing may be connected. -
