Simon Gribelin (1661-1733)
The Miraculous Draft of Fishes 1707
-
Pen and ink copy of the tapestry cartoon by Raphael. The cartoons by Raphael for a set of tapestries commissioned by Pope Leo X in 1515 have been in the Royal Collection since 1623 and, when Gribelin copied them, were on display at Hampton Court. They have been on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum since 1865. This drawing is one of a set showing the Raphael Cartoons which were engraved and published by Gribelin in 1707. The drawing is mounted on a sheet which has been inscribed by William Esdaile in ink.
Provenance
This and the accompanying drawings (RCINs 917313-21) were in the collection of E. King, sold at his sale (12 May 1808, lot 1407, where bought by Thane for £14 14s); William Esdaile collection (Lugt 2617), sold at his sale (23 June 1840, lot 872, where bought by White with lots 871 and 873 for £2), acquired for the Royal Collection after 1876 and by 1926 (when they were added to Prince's Albert's Raphael Collection).
