Simon Gribelin (1661-1733)
Hampton Court Raphael Gallery and the Seven Cartoons dated 1707
-
A pencil drawing of the Raphael Gallery at Hampton Court with a sketch of the arcade below. At the top, a medallion with Raphael, and at the bottom a medallion with Queen Anne. Draft inscriptions in pencil at bottom left (words in square brackest have been cancelled): ['A prospect of the'] 'A View of the Carton Galery [of] at Hampton Court [in] with the Seven Cartons drawn and engraved by Sim. Gribelin'. The drawing has been pricked at key points for transfer. This drawing is one of a set showing the Raphael Cartoons which were engraved and published by Gribelin in 1707. Here the cartoons have been drawn in reverse so they are shown in the correct orientation and order in the finished print. The drawing is mounted on a sheet which has been inscribed by William Esdaile in ink.
The cartoons by Raphael for a set of tapestries commissioned by Pope Leo X in 1515 have been in the Royal Collection since 1623. They have been on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum since 1865.Provenance
