A pencil and watercolour drawing of a view down the Long Walk towards Windsor Castle, with an equestrian statue of George III on a pedestal. With a grey wash and black ink line surround. Inscribed on the verso 'Statue of George 3 Windsor Park'.
In January 1821, George IV announced plans to place an equestrian statue of his father, George III, on Snow Hill at the end of the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park. The statue was carried out by Richard Westmacott, and shows George III in the style of a Roman Emperor, gesturing back towards the Castle. This drawing is puzzling, as Nash was not apparently involved in the project. The plinth is different to the final design which is formed of irregular rocks and was designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville. It is possibly an earlier proposal, or a drawing made after the project was completed.Provenance
John Pennethorne, pupil of John Nash; his staff; acquired in the Isle of Wight by Mr John Summerson FSA ARIBA; presented to the Royal Library in 1944
