Maurer, John (fl.1713-1761)
St. James's Park, the Horse Guards c. 1740
-
Apen and ink and wash drawing showing a parade of horse guards, leading the Royal Coach, in St James's Park.
The topographical printmaker and draughtsman John Maurer made many views of London in the first half of the eighteenth century. In this view, the Whitehall Gate can be seen at the far end, before it was demolished in 1723. However, this is a reduced version of a print of the same view by Maurer engraved in 1740, 'A perspective View of the Parade in St James's Park'. An impression of the print is included in the British Museum's Crowle Pennant, vol. IV, p. 22.Provenance
Probably purchased by George IV when Prince Regent from Colnaghi & Co., 1 May 1815 (Royal Archives GEO/MAIN/28052, 'Drawing View of Horse Guards, 10s 6d')
