The topographical draughtsman and printmaker John Maurer made many views of London in the first half of the eighteenth century. This watercolour is the same view as that seen in a print by Maurer dated 1741, showing a 'Perspective View of the Great Canal'. A monochrome drawing of the same subject but looking east is in the British Museum's Crowle Pennant, vol. IV, p. 103.
