A pencil and watercolour drawing of a north-west view of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, from Great Russell Street. This version of the theatre building opened in 1812.
Charles John Mayle Whichelo usually signed his works as John Whichelo. He was a British marine and topographical artist. This drawing is one of several works by Whichelo that were engraved and published in the Londina Illustrata (1808-23). The drawing was engraved by Bartholomew Howlett and published in Volume II, no. 178. Other drawings for the same project are 917072-3 by George Shepherd, and 917136, also by John Whichelo.Provenance
