Denis Dighton (1792-1827)
The First Duke of Wellington. c.1815
Watercolour | 35.0 x 25.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 916709
-
A watercolour of the Duke of Wellington. The Duke is mounted on a prancing dappled grey, to left; to the right, a tree (possibly the Waterloo Elm). A battle scene behind. The Duke of Wellington was 46 when he commanded the allied armies at the Battle of Waterloo and already had a distinguished military record. Although he had not previously fought an army led by Napoleon, he had led the British forces in the Peninsular War of 1807-14, which had liverated Spain and Portugal from French rule. As this portrait shows, Wellington did not dress in an officer's uniform, favouring a frok coat, breeches and cockade hat.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George IV when Prince Regent
