-
A pen and ink and wash drawing of a view of Reigate. A church in the meadows at the foot of the Downs. With a wash-line border, and a label inscribed 'Reygate' and pasted on the border.
Anthony Devis was the half-brother of better known painter of fashionable conversation pieces, Arthur Devis. Anthony worked on topographical subjects such as this view of Reigate in Surrey. He exhibited at the Free Society in 1761 and 1763, and at the Royal Academy in 1772 and 1781. Anthony Devis moved to Surrey in 1780, and presumably made this drawing as a result of exploring the local area. Devis made many paintings of country estates.Provenance
