After John Robert Cozens (1752-97)
Windsor Castle from Snow Hill c. 1795-1800
-
A watercolour drawing of a distant view of Windsor Castle and the town from Snow Hill.
The authorship of this watercolour is uncertain, but the work is a copy, possibly by Thomas Girtin, of a landscape by J. R. Cozens. One version of Cozen's original was in the possession of Mr and Mrs Cowan in 1950 (Paul Oppé, English Drawings in the Collection of His Majesty The King, no. 159). The drawing was purchased for the Royal Library in 1928 as a work by J.M.W. Turner, and reproduced as by him in the Connoisseur, XCIII, September 1933, p. 149; although the article also suggests that the work could be by James Bourne.Provenance
