Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912)
Princess Victoria of Wales 23 Jun 1897
-
A pencil portrait of the head of Princess Victoria of Wales, second daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Signed, dated and inscribed. Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a leading artist in late Victorian society, enjoying much royal approval. He was a member of the circle of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, and made this informal portrait of his daughter when the Princess was aged twenty-nine. A special issue of the periodical 'The Art Journal', published at Christmas in 1910, was devoted to Alma-Tadema, and reproduced a painting by him entitled 'Hopeful' which was then in the Princess's private collection.
Provenance
Presented to Princess Victoria of Wales by the artist and originally mounted in her autograph book.
