John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury (1748-1825)
The Round (Mill) House, Eastbourne c. 1780
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of a coastal scene showing the Round House at Eastbourne.
The Rev. Dr John Fisher, Bishop of Salisbury was good friends with George III and a proficient draughtsman, as mentioned regularly in Fanny Burney's Diary. In 1780 he was appointed Preceptor (tutor) to Prince Edward, later Duke of Kent. That summer the Prince stayed with two of his sisters, Princesses Elizabeth and Sophia, at Eastbourne. On the cliffs at Eastbourne there was a Round House erected by James Gandon, and used for grinding corn; it was pulled down in 1841. Mary Hamilton wrote of Dr Fisher instructing the royal children in drawing during the stay by the sea.
Another drawing and an etching of the Round House by Fisher are RCINs 917311.a and .b, acquired in 1944. The present drawing is mentioned in George III's 'Inventory A', although in the hand of J. H. Glover (Royal Librarian 1837-60). Glover did not attribute the drawing to Fisher, wondering if it might be the hand of Paul or Thomas Sandby.Provenance
First listed in George III's 'Inventory A' in the nineteenth century by J. H. Glover, No. 16., 'View (ideal?) on the Sea Coast with a circular building'
