A pencil, pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the Deputy Ranger's Lodge, seen from the drive. Trees in the foreground, unfinished, with figures on the drive. Villedary watermark. Inscribed on the verso in a 19th century hand associated with the dealer Colnaghi, 'Sandby's house', with the price, 15s.
Thomas Sandby was appointed Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park in 1765, and took up residence in the Deputy Ranger's House (now Royal Lodge) in about 1770. Oppé describes the sheet's clumsy handling and suggests an attribution to Thomas on that basis. Paul Sandby regularly visited his brother at Windsor; other drawings of the Lodge and grounds are RCINs 917864, 917868, 917871, 917874, the gardens are seen in 917555 and 917556, and three more finished watercolours 917634, 917597 and 917596.
