In front of the Hon. John Bateman's house at Old Windsor 1750
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 25.0 x 36.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914615
-
A watercolour drawing of a seventeenth-century red brick house and a lake, with an ornamental bridge in a 'Chinese' style. Several figures including horses at the pool and fishermen. Inscribed in pencil in the artist's hand, 'In front of the Honble John Batemans house at Old Windsor 1750'. The date has possibly been added later. A faint reflection of the bridge in the water is drawn in pencil. It is not certain whether this drawing is by Paul or Thomas Sandby.
The inscription is probably incorrect and refers to the Hon. Richard Bateman (1705-1773), a connoisseur, collector and patron who rented an old inn at Old Windsor and was much interested in the contemporary fashion for chinoiserie.Provenance
Purchased by George IV when Prince Regent from Colnaghi & Co., 13 May 1817 (Royal Archives GEO/MAIN/28149, '[Drawing] Front of Hon John Bateman House at Old Windsor, £1 11s 6d')
