Windsor Castle from the Great Park c. 1750-70
Pencil and watercolour | 35.3 x 59.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914609
-
A pencil and watercolour drawing of a view of Windsor Great Park, with the south-east aspect of Windsor Castle in the distance. Deer grazing in the foreground Sheet discoloured and stained, with 4cm added on right. Inscribed in pencil across the sky in a large 19th century hand associated with the dealer Colnaghi, 'View of Windsor', and in pen over pencil on the verso, 'Windsor Park'.
The Sandby brothers made many hundreds of drawings of Windsor Castle and the Windsor estate. Paul Oppé questioned the attribution of this sheet to either of the Sandby brothers, although the treatment of the foliage may suggest an attribution to Thomas. Both brothers were responsible for a series of prints of the Great Park in 1754, and made many more views of the estate.
Provenance
Possibly acquired by George IV when Prince of Wales from Colnaghi, 16th July 1810, 10s 6d ('A Sketch of Windsor Park by Paul Sandby', Royal Archives invoice no. 27546)
