Windsor Bridge from Datchet Lane dated 1798
Bodycolour | 33.5 x 61.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914600
-
A watercolour drawing of the bridge between Windsor and Eton, with the river and houses of Eton on the right. On the left is the corner of St George's Chapel above the houses of Datchet Lane. With a cart and horses on Datchet Lane, cattle by the river, and a man loading a packhorse. A stonecutter is seated by blocks of stone on the riverbank. Sunset light. Signed and dated: P. Sandby 1798. Sheet is bordered at the bottom, with some damage at the left, possibly from the removal from canvas.
Paul Sandby made hundreds of views of Windsor Castle and the surrounding parkland, exhibiting them at the Royal Academy throughout his life. This atmospheric sunset view was made near the site of the present Windsor and Eton Riverside railway station. Another version of the same subject is in the British Museum (1878,0713.1280). Sandby often reused and recycled figure studies across different works, and the figure of the stonecutter is taken from RCIN 932457 and also appears in RCIN 914555, a view of the Horseshoe Cloister. The work is unusual in having been signed and dated.
The work was transferred to the Royal Library from St James's Palace in 1886.Provenance
Probably Paul Sandby estate sale, 2-4 May 1811, third day, lot 68, 'View of Windsor Bridge, high finished, body colour framed and glazed'; bought 'Shepperd' for George IV when Prince of Wales, 6 ½ guineas
