Windsor Castle from the playing fields at Eton c. 1770

-
A watercolour drawing of Windsor Castle seen from the playing fields at Eton, through trees and across the river.
Sandby made many drawings of Windsor and the surrounding area after his brother's appointment as draughtsman to William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and in 1765, to the position of Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park. Sandby's drawings of Windsor can be difficult to date as a result, but on stylistic grounds this drawing may date to around 1770, the same approximate date given to another version of the same subject from a different angle in the collection of Sir Joseph Banks (1876 sale, lot 41) and now in the V&A (D. 1833-1904). Oppé suggested that the lack of figures and loose treatment of the architecture and trees may suggest that the drawing is unfinished.
Provenance
Probably Paul Sandby estate sale, 2-4 May 1811, second day, lot 73, 'View of Windsor from the Playfields at Eton, tinted drawing'; bought 'Sheppherd' for George IV when Prince of Wales, £4 4s.
