The mount has a gold, blue, grey and black wash line border of a type associated with works from the collection of Sir Joseph Banks. Inscribed on the verso in pencil, 'Windsor from the Black Rod'. A drawing in ink and wash of the same subject is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 914562), probably a preparatory study. The buildings in the Black Rod were demolished during George III's improvement works in the 1780s.
