A pencil drawing of Windsor Castle, showing the entrance from the Town [Queen Elizabeth's] Gate, looking eastwards up Castle Hill. In the foreground are two men on horseback, and two men with a horse and cart loaded with barrels. Inscribed in pencil in the ruled border 'Entrance from the Town Gate'. At the lower right corner is a version of the pencil 'F' mark, which occurs on many drawings by Paul and Thomas Sandby but has not been fully explained. Ruled lines used for drawing the architecture. Mounted on a sheet of grey paper.
A watercolour of the same view formerly in the collections of Sir Joseph Banks (1876 sale, lot 38) and the Hon. Sir Richard Molyneux has a man with a wheelbarrow in the foreground.
