Studies of three men c. 1747 - c. 1760
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of groups of figures in the street. On the left, three female figures in shawls and aprons with small children. A standing male figure in blue coat and red waistcoat on the right. Mounted together with RCINs 914502-10. Sandby often made several versions of the same figures and repeated figures across several drawings. The standing male figure appears in RCIN 914472 and in a drawing of Somerset House Gardens attributed to Thomas Sandby in the Crowle Pennant in the British Museum (L.B.9). The woman at the centre and the child appear in a drawing at the British Museum (L.B.88(d)). Sandby made many small observational drawings of figures around Edinburgh, Windsor and London.
