A pencil drawing of a female figure in riding costume, seen from behind and seated at a needlework frame. Inscribed below in the artist's hand, 'Lady Eliz. Harcourt'. Lady Elizabeth Harcourt (b. 18 June 1739), sister of George Simon, 2nd Earl of Harcourt, married Sir William Lee in 1763. RCIN 914382 probably shows the same sitter, and is dated 1760. The chair in both drawings is identical. Another version of the same drawing, inscribed 'Lady Elizth Harcourt, 1759, by Paul Sandby' is in the collection of Lord Nuneham. Lady Elizabeth Harcourt received drawing lessons from Richard Dalton, George Knapton, Joshua Kirby and Alexander Cozens (see Kim Sloan, 'A Noble Art: Amateur Artists and Drawing Masters', exh cat British Museum, 2000, p. 135). Paul Sandby also knew the family, painting the new family seat at Nuneham, which he exhibited at the Society or Arts in 1760.
