One of 134 figure studies contained in a volume bought at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811. Jonathan Wild (bap. 1683-1725) was a notorious and shadowy figure from London's criminal underworld, operating on both sides of the law. He was executed in 1725, and became a popular subject for novelists, playwrights and satirists.
