Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
An old lady playing cards c. 1755
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of an old lady in a fur collar and white cap playing cards, seated in a crimson upholstered chair. The upper left corner of the sheet has been trimmed diagonally and made up. The drawing is similar to figure studies in domestic interiors made in about 1747-50, when Sandby was in Scotland, or figure drawings made after his return to London. RCINs 914430 and 914431 also show seated card players. Other similar examples are RCINs 914406, 914407 and 914408.
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
