Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
A lady playing cards c. 1755
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of a female figure seated at a table, playing cards. The woman wears a red dress with blue ribbons at the sleeve, a black shawl and white cap. The corners of the sheet have been trimmed diagonally and made up. The drawing is similar to figure studies in domestic interiors made in about 1747-50, when Sandby was in Scotland, or after his return to London. RCINs 914430 and 914432 also show seated card players. Other similar examples are RCINs 914406, 914407 and 914408.
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
