A lady playing cards c. 1750
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 11.4 x 14.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914430
-
A pencil and watercolour drawing of a female figure seated at a table, playing cards. A pencil drawing of a woman's head to the right. The drawing is similar to figure studies in domestic interiors made in about 1747-50, when Sandby was in Scotland. Other similar examples are RCINs 914406, 914407 and 914408. The method of tying a corsage with a single ribbon is possibly a local fashion, and can be seen in a portrait of Lady Hall of Dunglass by Allan Ramsay (Tate).
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
