This is one of Sandby's earliest figure studies, dating from his years in Scotland from 1747-52. A similar drawing in size and style is RCIN 914406. The method of tying a corsage with a single ribbon is possibly a local fashion, and can be seen in a portrait of Lady Hall of Dunglass by Allan Ramsay (Tate).
