'Miss Isherwoods, the Brewer's daughters, Windsor' c. 1770 - c. 1780
Pencil, wash and watercolour | 11.0 x 13.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914394
-
A pencil and wash drawing of two female figures, with a third third lightly indicated in the background. Both girls are wearing riding habits consisting of a jacket and petticoat, the jacket cut at the hip with a generous skirt to fit over the petticoat. The figure on the right is standing against a tree and on the left is seated, holding a whip. The drawing could be a study of the same figure in two positions.
The daughters of Mr Isherwood, founder of the Brewery in Datchet Lane (see RCINs 914595, 914596 and 914597), were stated to be living at Bushey in 1797 (Gentleman's Magazine, LXVIII, p. 536). Their father died in 1772; their brother Henry Isherwood, MP for Windsor in 1796, died a year later.Provenance
Possibly from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
