The Ladies Waldegrave c. 1760 - c. 1770
Pencil, pen and ink and wash | 10.3 x 12.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914390
-
A pencil, pen and ink and wash drawing of three girls, two standing on the left with linked arms. All three are wearing bonnets. Inscribed in pencil at the bottom edge 'Lady Waldegrave' and 'white' and 'blue'. The three figures are in a watercolour in the V&A (D.1835-1904), apparently dated 1760, although the three daughters of Lady Waldegrave were born in 1760, 1761 and 1762. The group appears in different configurations in an aquatint of 1776 (RCIN 814322.a); a drawing of Old Somerset House (RCIN 914698) and a bodycolour of the North Terrace looking east formerly in the collection of Mrs Angerstein. The figure on the right is possibly a second study of the second of the two girls on the left.
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
