Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
The Duke of Cumberland's Hussars c. 1750 - c. 1765
Pencil | 17.9 x 8.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914375
-
A pencil drawing of a soldier, full-length, standing nearly full face, the right hand within his bandolier, the left on his curved sword. Inscribed below on the modern mount, probably copied from an earlier one, 'Duke of Cumberland's Hussars'. Mounted together with RCINs 914372-4. A red chalk drawing of the same soldier in a different pose is now at Stanton Harcourt, inscribed and dated 'William Earl of Harcourt 1824', a puzzling date as Sandby died in 1809.
