Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 21.1 x 12.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914371
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of two standing soldiers wearing the uniform of the Coldstream Guards. On the right, facing front, a private in uniform with bayonet. Behind, another soldier facing behind with no bayonet. Inscribed below in pencil in the artist's hand: British Grenadiers in the Allied Army. Previously mounted with RCINs 914369 and 914370. The drawing is probably by Thomas Sandby, who made many drawings of soldiers in military camps while working for the Duke of Cumberland in the Low Countries. Guards regiments used mitred caps from 1678, which were regularised after about 1751. Such hats were not used after 1768.
Provenance
From a volume of figure studies at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 16-18 April 1817, lot 44; bought by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland; bought for the Royal Library from Sir Francis Dyke Acland in 1930 (the whole volume £30)
