Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
A kitchen scene c. 1754
-
A watercolour drawing of a maid standing in front of a table in a domestic panelled interior, her left arm on her hip. The maid wears a red skirt and checked apron, with a red heart dangling at the waist. On the table is a pie or a pat of butter, and a small mirror hangs on the wall. Passers by are visible behind railings through the window behind. Inscribed in tiny lettering on the window pane, possibly 'Assist me evry Sund.../Oh send me all...' A related pencil drawing is on the verso of RCIN 914435, and a drawing in pen and ink over an offset is in the British Museum (L.B. 138, no. 64). The drawing is similar in treatment to drawings of domestic interiors that Paul Sandby made at Sandpit Gate, Windsor, after 1752. The presence of the railings suggests an urban setting, probably London.
Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
