A watercolour drawing of two maids in a domestic interior. One stands at a laundry tub, the other is kneeling at a hearth with a large black pot above the fire. The maids both wear strapless stitched stays with shifts and pettycoats. Copper pans above the mantelpiece. Inscribed on the mount at the bottom, possibly copied from an earlier one, 'At Sandpit Gate'.
Thomas Sandby lived at Sandpit Gate in Windsor from about 1746, where he was employed by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. After settling in London in 1752, Paul Sandby often visited his elder brother at Windsor and made drawings of domestic interiors (for example, RCINs 914333, 914329).Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
