Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
Two ladies and a boy c. 1754
-
A red and black chalk drawing of two ladies in sacque gowns and flat, ribboned hats, walking to right. One woman holds a fan; a boy standing at far right. The sheet numbered in the upper right corner, '15'. The figure group appears in the engraving 'The Cascase and the Grotto', (RCIN 814378) one of eight views of Windsor Great Park made for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland by both Sandby brothers and published in 1754. The figure on the left is similar to a pencil drawing by Sandby (RCIN 914386), a figure in a watercolour (RCIN 914646), a drawing at the British Museum by Thomas Sandby (L.B. 7) and another print from the same 1754 series, 'View from the North Side of Virginia River' (RCIN 814381).

Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
