Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
A female figure in a park c. 1751-2
-
A red chalk drawing of a female figure with a fan, standing in a park. Her dress has a short skirt with hoops, an embroidered corsage and flounced sleeves. The beehive-shaped hat appears in another drawing by Sandby of a similar date, RCIN 914383.
This drawing is drawn in the same red chalk as two Sandby drawings that are copied after sheets by his close contemporary Thomas Gainsborough (RCINs 914322 and 914323). This sheet may also be a copy after a drawing by Gainsborough or another artist. Sandby made several red and black chalk drawings of fashionably dressed figures after he settled in London and Windsor after 1751. See R. Razzall, 'Paul Sandby copying Gainsborough: Sharing, Sociability and Self-fashioning', Master Drawings, vol. 58, no. 2, 2020, pp. 226-246. A.P. Oppé noted that the costume is unusual and is possibly that of a dancer.Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
