A half-length oil portrait of Prince Edward of York, depicted in profile to the left, wearing a sailor suit and holding a bunch of flowers. Signed, dated and inscribed "HRH/Prince Edward of York./1897." and "WQO".
Orchardson, a genre and portrait painter, executed a small group of portrait sketches of members of the royal family, including this one, as studies for a painting entitled "Four Generations: Queen Victoria and Her Descendants", which was commissioned by the Royal Agricultural Society in 1897. This was said to be the largest work Orchardson ever painted.Provenance
