Orchardson, a genre and portrait painter, executed a small group of portrait sketches of members of the royal family, including this one, as studies for a painting entitled "Four Generations: Queen Victoria and Her Descendants", which was commissioned by the Royal Agricultural Society in 1897. This was said to be the largest work Orchardson ever painted.
