Queen Victoria and Prince Albert kneeling before the altar rails 1840
Pencil | 18.2 x 26.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914176
-
A drawing of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, full-length, kneeling and looking at each other. Queen Victoria commissioned the artist Sir George Hayter to paint the moment in the marriage ceremony when her hand was joined with Prince Albert’s. This drawing of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert kneeling at the altar rails is one of the studies for the painting. Hayter seems to have had trouble positioning Prince Albert’s legs. Three pieces of paper form a flap, which was fixed over this sheet showing alternative positions for the Prince. In the final painting, which now hangs in the State Apartments at Kensington Palace, Victoria and Albert stand rather than kneel at the altar rail. In his left hand Prince Albert holds a prayer book, which he was given on his wedding day by his aunt and mother-in-law, Victoria, Duchess of Kent.
