A pencil on vellum drawing of two men and a woman seated in a pergola, with a boy bringing a kettle. Inscribed below: Thomas Worlidge fecit 1736.
The drawing is probably by Thomas Worlidge, who lived in London in the 1730s and made portrait drawings on vellum. Conversation pieces centring around the drinking of tea, a valuable and fashionable commodity, were highly popular in this period; see for example Ching-Jung Chen, “Tea Parties in Early Georgian Conversation Pieces.” The British Art Journal, vol. 10, no. 1, 2009, pp. 30–39. -
