A red and black chalk drawing of Frederick, Prince of Wales, seated, playing the violincello. inscribed on the verso in black chalk 'i[...]' and in red chalk 'Frak P. of Wales [in black] (father of George III) by T Worlidge'. TW in monogram in the upper right corner.
The drawing is a copy by Worlidge after a painting by Philippe Mercier (1689–1760) of Frederick playing the cello with his three elder sisters, dated 1733. There are three versions of the painting (Royal Collection RCIN 402414, National Trust and National Portrait Gallery). A copy of one of the other figures, Anne, Princess Royal, is RCIN 913875. -
