Rag Fair c. 1800

A watercolour of a bustling street scene. Men and women have set out stalls selling second hand clothes ranging from breeches to boots. Many people observe the proceedings from windows above the shops, including an old man on the right who is wearing a cap and smoking a pipe.
Rag Fair, near present-day Liverpool Street Station, was a market where old clothes and textiles were traded. The role of many Jewish merchants in the thriving second hand clothes trade in London, as well as the contemporary prejudice towards this involvement, is reflected in Rowlandson’s inclusion of derogatory caricatures amongst the crowd and fictionalised and stereotyped names above shop doors. Rowlandson made at least three other versions of this drawing.
