A drawing of the head and shoulders of a female dressed as Helen of Troy in a red robe and wearing a gold circlet and jewellery. Signed in monogram and dated.
There is an earlier version, in oils, of this watercolour in the Art Gallery of New South Wales (inv.no.OB2.1968), dated 1881. The model (the same woman?) adopts the same pose and wears the same intricate necklace in both works. There are some differences, however, including their backgrounds and the inclusion of a gold tiara and earrings in the watercolour that are absent in the oil painting.Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria in 1887 as part of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour Golden Jubilee gift
