Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830)
Constantine Henry Phipps, 1st Marquess of Normanby (1797-1863) c. 1818-28
-
A black and red chalk drawing of a portrait of Constantine Henry Phipps, 1st Marquess of Normanby. Signed: T. L. and inscribed: Normanby.
Lawrence painted a portrait of Phipps' father, Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave, and a print was published in 1808. This drawing, apparently showing a young man, may have been made at the beginning of Normanby's political career. In 1818 he reached his majority and was elected MP for Scarborough. -
